WIGGLING THE WIKI WORLD
After we spent so much time tightening our website’s security in order to prevent anyone from breaking in and defacing (that’s the term used to describe the act of changing the face) our web’s content and interface, it is very weired to know that there are actually website which let visitors change the web’s content to their heart’s content. The community is known as wiki-wiki, and this is the story.
What is Wiki?
The term ‘wiki’ or ‘wiki-wiki’ is taken from a Hawaiian word that means is ‘quick’. According to the creator, Ward Cunningham, Wiki is the simplest online database that could possibly work. The real thing is far from simple. Wiki is a piece of server software that allows users to freely create and edit webpage content using any web browser. Wiki supports hyperlinks and has simple text syntax for creating new pages and crosslink between internal pages easily. Wiki allows its contributors to edit other contributors content. And as the collaboration process is gaining more popularity these days, so is Wiki. The first ever Wiki site was created for the Portland Pattern Repository in 1995. that site now hosts tens of thousands of pages and remains one of the most popular Wiki sites.
The right place to find information
Other most popular Wiki sites (wikipedia.org) the online collaborative encyclopedia. Along with (but not as popular as) Google, this is the best way to find information on the Net. It’s like having your own library and more! Just write the search string(s) and in s split second you’ll have the information delivered to computer screen. Wikipedia is free and it’s comprehensive. It contains almost every information anybody can think of. And if you cannot find something, just add that topic yourself. And since everybody is building the site together, you can also expect find Wikipedia is several different languages. There’re too many things on Wiki to be covered here.
