Arak

“Arak” is a traditional beverage in Flores. Basically “Arak” is an alcohol that was produced by the refining process of “Tuak”. “Tuak” is a liquid or latex that was taken from the sugar palms tree, then “Tuak” should be gathered by the craftsmen and their placed into inner of the pot for refining process, and their heated “Tuak” for taken the vapour and the vapour was called arrack and the level of alcohol could be arranged based on the length of refining time. Increasingly a little vapour that was certainly the level of alcohol to high, and could be reach 60% the level of alcohol would be contained in “Arak”. For the craftsmen, “Arak” can be cause fortune, because they can sell to other.
Initially “Arak” just to drunk at the time of the traditional ceremony, but together with the passing of time “Arak” became consumption not in traditional ceremony but at the time of relaxed or other gossip. Eventually, drank “Arak” could be drunk, and the victim will do anything when in the drunk condition! Many people was sick and even died because continuously consumed “Arak”.
